And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. In a world where the great "we" reign supreme, he has rediscovered the lost and holy word-"I." A True Classic that Belongs on Every Bookshelf! Now he has been marked for death for committing the ultimate sin. In a purely egalitarian world, Equality 7-2521 dares to stand apart from the herd-to think and choose for himself, to discover electricity, and to love the woman of his choice. Despite such a restrictive environment, the spark of individual thought and freedom still burns in him-a passion which he has been taught to call sinful. Equality 7-2521 lives in the dark ages of the future where all decisions are made by committee, all people live in collectives, and all traces of individualism have been wiped out. In Anthem, Rand examines a frightening future in which individuals have no name, no independence, and no values. It is its own purpose.” ― Ayn Rand, Anthem Anthem has long been hailed as one of Ayn Rand's classic novels, and a clear predecessor to her later masterpieces, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. “My happiness is not the means to any end.

Statues (standing and sitting figures of rulers and their wives) and paintings adorned the tombs. The chapter also includes some information regarding the decoration of the tombs (Kleiner 35). The construction of the complex required the investment of the enormous input of thousands of workers. The Pyramids of Gizeh became one of the Seven Wonders due to their size and used resources. Eventually, Egyptian kings were buried in pyramids that symbolized the sun and its rays, as well as the king’s path to the sun. Imhotep created a new tradition when he created a tomb for Djoser, which was a stepped pyramid. Initially, rulers and nobility were buried in mastaba tombs (Kleiner 32). Substantial attention is also paid to the afterlife and rulers’ tombs as this was an important part of the culture of Ancient Egypt. The Palette of King Narmer is described in detail as it displays the events that led to the unification. The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt is regarded as the start of the history of Ancient Egypt (Kleiner 30). There are quite numerous artifacts (pottery, paintings, and tombs) that date back to prehistoric times. The part of the first chapter of “ Gardner’s Art Through the Ages” dwells upon the history of Ancient Egypt from the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt to the period of the New Kingdom. I am not sure if this is a stand-alone or the first book in a new series. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy. Zaide has some wonderful skills too like controlling the wind and peeling people's skins off layer by layer. Even when he tosses his eyeballs on the floor - you have to read it to find out why - he is still the best. Kai is the born killer you still have to love. I found myself completely rapt by the main characters particularly Kai and Zaide. Once or twice I found myself confused as to whether I was reading about now or then.Ī lot happens and it is a very difficult book to put down at all. Each past chapter cleverly feeds information to the reader which is needed to really understand the events of the present time. The book is written with alternate sections of the past and the present. This works for both sides as the demons expand their way of life, and the family members do not die but do acquire super skills. Kai has been part of a scheme whereby demons are brought up above to inhabit the bodies of members of high families. This author has a real talent for writing charismatic main characters (Murderbot comes to mind immediately) and she has done it again with Kai, a demon from the Underworld. I was lucky enough to be able to read an advance copy of this book which is a new epic fantasy from Martha Wells. Anthony identifies the prehistoric peoples of central Eurasia's steppe grasslands as the original speakers of Proto-Indo-European, and shows how their innovative use of the ox wagon, horseback riding, and the warrior's chariot turned the Eurasian steppes into a thriving transcontinental corridor of communication, commerce, and cultural exchange. Linking prehistoric archaeological remains with the development of language, David W. The Horse, the Wheel, and Language lifts the veil that has long shrouded these original Indo-European speakers, and reveals how their domestication of horses and use of the wheel spread language and transformed civilization. But who were the early speakers of this ancient mother tongue, and how did they manage to spread it around the globe? Until now their identity has remained a tantalizing mystery to linguists, archaeologists, and even Nazis seeking the roots of the Aryan race. Roughly half the world's population speaks languages derived from a shared linguistic source known as Proto-Indo-European. |
